Primary Symptoms of Sinus Conditions

Sinus issues can stem from a variety of causes. Environmental allergies—such as reactions to dust, pollen, and other airborne irritants—may trigger symptoms year-round. Structural or congenital conditions, like a deviated septum or narrow sinus passages, can also contribute to nasal blockage and discomfort. If you experience one or more of the following symptoms, it may be time to consult an ENT specialist:
  • Nasal congestion or blockage
  • Facial pain or pressure
  • Headaches
  • Postnasal drip
  • Runny nose
  • Cough or sore throat
  • Reduced sense of smell or taste

Common Sinus and Nasal Conditions

If you’re experiencing facial pain, pressure, congestion, or difficulty breathing through your nose, you may be dealing with one of the following conditions:

Chronic Sinusitis

Also known as chronic rhinosinusitis, this condition involves persistent inflammation of the sinuses lasting 12 weeks or longer, despite treatment. It can be caused by allergies, infections, nasal polyps, or an impaired immune response.

Nasal Obstruction

Nasal obstruction refers to a partial or complete blockage of one or both nasal passages, making it difficult to breathe through the nose. Causes may include a deviated septum, enlarged turbinates, nasal polyps, or structural abnormalities.

Chronic Rhinitis

Chronic rhinitis is long-term inflammation or irritation of the nasal lining. It often results in runny nose, congestion, sneezing, postnasal drip, and nasal itching. It may be allergic (triggered by allergens) or non-allergic (triggered by irritants, weather, or unknown causes).

Nasal Polyps

Nasal polyps are soft, noncancerous growths that develop on the lining of the nasal passages or sinuses due to chronic inflammation. They are often associated with asthma, chronic sinusitis, and aspirin sensitivity. Large or multiple polyps can obstruct airflow and reduce the sense of smell.

Deviated Septum

A deviated septum occurs when the thin wall between the nostrils is displaced to one side, making one nasal passage smaller. This can lead to nasal obstruction, snoring, frequent sinus infections, and difficulty breathing through the nose.
