When Is Thyroid Surgery Necessary?

Thyroid surgery may be recommended for:
  • Goiters (enlarged thyroid glands), with or without nodules or cysts
  • Thyroid nodules causing compression or cosmetic concern
  • Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) that does not respond to medication or radioactive iodine
  • Suspicious or cancerous growths confirmed by biopsy
  • Goiters that grow into the chest or press on the windpipe or esophagus, affecting breathing or swallowing
In some cases, thyroid hormone therapy or radioactive iodine may help manage symptoms without surgery. However, surgery becomes necessary when structural or cancerous changes are present.
