Hearing Symptoms & Conditions
What Are the Symptoms of Hearing Loss?
It can occur when there’s a problem with the outer, middle, or inner ear, the auditory nerve, or the brain’s ability to interpret sound. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and may develop gradually over time. You may be experiencing hearing loss if you notice:
- Difficulty understanding speech, especially in noisy environments
- Muffled or distorted sounds
- Frequently straining to hear
- Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
- Needing to increase the volume on the TV, phone, or music
- Trouble hearing high-pitched sounds, such as voices of children or birds
- Misunderstanding words or asking others to repeat themselves
- Withdrawing from conversations or avoiding social situations

Types and Severity of Hearing Loss
Hearing loss can vary in type and severity, depending on which part of the auditory system is affected and the underlying cause. The three primary types of hearing loss include:
Conductive Hearing Loss
Conductive hearing loss occurs when sound cannot pass efficiently through the outer or middle ear to the inner ear.
Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SNHL)
Sensorineural hearing loss results from damage to the inner ear (cochlea) or the auditory nerve, which prevents sound signals from being properly transmitted to the brain. It is often permanent and may be caused by aging, noise exposure, infections, or certain medical conditions.
Mixed Hearing Loss
Mixed hearing loss is a combination of conductive and sensorineural components. It involves problems in both the outer or middle ear and the inner ear or auditory nerve.

Do I Have Hearing Loss?
Determining whether you have hearing loss begins with a thorough evaluation by our ENT specialists. During your initial visit, we’ll review your current symptoms, medical history, and any previous hearing concerns. An audiologist will then perform a comprehensive hearing test to determine the presence, type, and severity of hearing loss. This assessment allows us to develop a personalized treatment plan based on your unique needs.
